The power of friendship helps three young patients through heart transplants

Three young heart patients at Texas Children’s Hospital turned a difficult medical journey into an inspiring story of friendship, resilience and hope. Ahmed, Nasir and Preston, ages 6 and 7, each spent nearly a year in the hospital waiting for life-saving heart transplants. During their long stays, the boys formed a close bond, supporting one another as they faced the same life-threatening condition. Then, in what doctors described as an extraordinarily rare occurrence, all three boys received matching gifts within a span of just 10 days. “Extremely low odds,” said Joseph Spinner, M.D., of Texas Children’s Hospital. “These kids were waiting a combined over a thousand days for their heart transplants in the hospital.”
The friendship the boys built while waiting for new hearts only grew stronger after their successful surgeries. As each child was discharged, hospital staff, families and friends celebrated with Texas Children’s traditional parade through the halls. Ahmed, who spent 351 days in the hospital, was the last of the trio to head home, cheered on by the same friends who shared his journey.
“I think these children teach us how to be grateful for what we have,” Spinner said, reflecting on the boys’ remarkable outlook. “It’s amazing that they can be so sick yet have such a positive attitude.”
Today, all three boys are recovering well and maintaining the friendship that carried them through their toughest days.
