South Dakota moms with substance use disorder have new family-focused, residential recovery program

Avera Sacred Heart Hospital and Lewis and Clark Behavioral Health Services have opened the new Park Haven Learning and Recovery Center, an 18-bed residential treatment facility designed specifically for women with substance use disorders, including pregnant women and mothers with dependent children. Hospital leaders said the project addresses a critical behavioral health need identified through community health assessments and expands access to treatment services in southeastern South Dakota.
The program integrates healthcare, social services and state funding to offer family-centered addiction treatment, with private rooms, shared living spaces and accommodations that allow mothers to remain with infants or young children while receiving care.
Officials from both organizations described the center as a long-term community asset that can help reduce homelessness, prevent relapse, and improve outcomes for women and children.
