Palliative care is the medical sub-specialty that treats the symptoms and stresses of serious illness. Over 50 million Americans have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the pandemic began and, by definition, those who have been hospitalized were seriously ill. The U.S. Supreme Court today held oral arguments on whether to allow the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ and Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s vaccine mandates to go into effect while appeals are heard in the courts of appeals. While trying to predict how the court will rule based on the oral arguments is difficult, there were some key moments that deserve a deeper dive. In this episode, Chad Golder, AHA Deputy General Counsel, talks with Sean Marotta, a partner at Hogan Lovells and AHA outside counsel. They break down today’s oral arguments and what the next steps could be for the CMS and OSHA mandates.

Reuven Pasternak, Interim Senior Advisor and Joshua Corman, Chief Strategist. Reuven and Joshua will discuss a CISA Insights report “Provide Medical Care is in Critical Condition: Analysis and Stakeholder Decision Support to Minimize Further Harm” a groundbreaking qualitative and quantitative analysis, which models and measures hospital strain associated with excess deaths, as well as the effect of ransomware and the impact such a strain can have on a hospital and region, further contributing to excess deaths. This report tends to corroborate what to many is intuitive - ransomware attacks on hospitals may disrupt care delivery, risk patient safety and are threat to life crimes.

The pandemic accelerated the adoption and expansion of tele-health services and reduced barriers to providing virtual care. In this podcast, Rebecca Chickey, senior director of field engagement and behavioral health services at AHA, is speaking with leaders from Allina health in Minnesota and western Wisconsin about mental health and addiction services and key digital innovations that the health system is using to provide behavioral health care to patients throughout the pandemic and beyond.
