Prescribe Safe Initiative: Combatting Opioid Abuse webinar

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is committed to supporting and advocating for organizations that are tackling the opioid crisis. This webinar provides an update since AHA’s April 2016 webinar on the Prescribe Safe Initiative, created by Monterey County law enforcement, four Monterey County hospitals, and local physicians in response to concerns about prescription medication misuse in Monterey County, CA. Results continue to be sustained and expanded over this multi-year initiatives. Impacts include, a 50-60% reduction in ambulatory narcotic prescribing; a 55% reduction in Medicare Advantage health plan spend; the use of non-opioid pain modalities in the ED increased by 139% to 330%; and a reduction in recurrent ED visits from 16 visits/year to 2 visits/year, among others.
