CDC updates blood and tissue safety risk for three Florida counties
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yesterday announced the potential for increased risk to blood and tissue safety in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, FL, starting on June 15, 2016, due to local Zika virus transmission. “This increased risk is particularly relevant for semen because of evidence regarding the persistence of Zika virus in this reproductive tissue,” CDC said. The Food and Drug Administration issued updated guidance for blood establishments and human cell, tissue and cellular and tissue-based product establishments based on the new information. “In consultation with their health care providers, women and their partners should take this potential risk into consideration when trying to conceive,” CDC said. “Additionally, health care providers should counsel pregnant women who might be exposed to semen from men potentially infected with Zika virus about this risk and consult existing CDC guidance for evaluating and caring for them.”
