Today is the deadline for eligible health care providers to submit their revenue information to the Department of Health and Human Services to potentially qualify for an additional payment from the $50 billion general distribution of provider relief emergency funds.

In April HHS distributed $50 billion to providers in proportion to their share of 2018 total net patient revenue. In doing so, HHS used revenue data from Medicare cost reports. However, providers with inaccurate or missing cost report data are permitted to reject the payment they received and submit corrected information in order to receive a revised amount from the fund. For more details on how to submit revenue information, visit the HHS webpage.

Providers have 90 days from the date they receive a payment to attest and accept the terms and conditions or return the funds. For example, the deadline for providers who received payment on April 10 is now July 9. With the extension, not returning the payment within 90 days of receipt of payment will be viewed as acceptance of the terms and conditions.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act and Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act included $175 billion in the Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund to reimburse health care providers for health care-related expenses or lost revenues not otherwise reimbursed that are attributable to COVID-19. For more on what HHS considers lost revenue, see the agency’s updated FAQs.
