Effective Aug. 1, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has instructed Medicare Administrative Contractors to begin checking hospital and health system claims for outpatient services provided in off-campus provider-based departments to ensure that the address where the services were provided exactly matches the provider location information in the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System, the agency announced. Claims that do not match the PECOS information will be returned to the provider. CMS planned to implement the policy in October 2020 but delayed it indefinitely.
