CMS: At least 1 in 3 Medicaid/CHIP enrollees up for renewal in April disenrolled
In the 18 states that began unwinding the continuous coverage requirement for Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program enrollees in April, 46% of enrollees with coverage up for renewal had their coverage renewed, 32% were terminated and redeterminations for the rest are pending, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reported in its first monthly data report on renewals. In a letter to governors, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra again encouraged states to adopt all available strategies to minimize terminations, including automatically renewing coverage when data from other programs show a person is eligible for Medicaid or CHIP renewal.
“While states are required to operate this automatic renewal policy under federal regulations, there is wide variation between states, with some using this strategy more effectively than others,” he said.
