The American Medical Association plans to award $15 million in grants over five years to graduate medical education sponsors, medical schools, health systems and specialty societies that partner to better align residency training with the evolving needs of patients, communities and the health care system. Building on the association’s consortium of 32 medical schools reinventing undergraduate medical education, the Reimagining Residency initiative will fund up to eight partnerships intended to help future physicians transition from medical school to residency, develop skills to enhance their readiness for practice, and train in an environment that promotes their well-being. AMA plans to release a request for proposals in early January, solicit full proposals from selected letters of intent in late February and announce awards in June. Recipients will join an AMA-convened consortium that will share lessons learned and help promote successful innovations for adoption. For more on the program, register to attend the Jan. 16 informational webinar. AHA Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Jay Bhatt, D.O., is on the National Advisory Panel for the initiative.
