Studies look at impact of COVID-19 on U.S. mortality, VHA hospital patients
A study released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 299,028 more deaths than expected occurred in the United States between Jan. 26 and Oct. 3, with 66% attributed to COVID-19.
The largest increases were among adults aged 25-44 years and Hispanic or Latino residents. A second CDC study released today looks at Veterans Health Administration patients hospitalized with COVID-19, who were five times more likely to die than those hospitalized with flu and twice as likely to be admitted to an intensive care unit.
The COVID-19 patients also were more likely to experience 17 complications, with risks for sepsis, respiratory, neurologic and renal complications
