Hospitals and health systems lose 2,100 jobs in January

Hospitals and health systems lost 2,100 jobs in January, as U.S. jobs overall increased by 49,000, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

It’s the first month of losses since September 2020.

Hospitals and health systems have added 61,000 jobs since the beginning of the pandemic, but are still below their February 2020 peak. Physicians, dentists and other office-based providers also added jobs in January, while nursing and residential care facilities shed about 31,000.

The health care field reported losing more than 29,600 jobs in January, falling to just under 16 million seasonally adjusted.
