Customizing the birth experience through Labor of Love Cart

Telling the Hospital Story: Logan Health Customizing the birth experience through Labor of Love Cart. Logan Health labor and delivery staff pose in a delivery room

To help ease the stress and anxiety that many women experience during labor —especially those with a history of trauma or long inductions — the Labor and Delivery team at Logan Health Medical Center has developed the “ Labor of Love” cart, a menu of thoughtfully curated items designed to create a calming and personalized birthing environment. Among the offerings are “environmental enhancers” such as special lighting, birth affirmation cards, and a wireless speaker for music. One standout feature is the Northern Lights projector, which has become a favorite among patients for its soothing visual effects.

Beyond visual and auditory comforts, the cart also includes aromatherapy supplies and a menu that highlights other available labor aids like birthing balls, squat bars, and wireless monitors. These tools not only help women feel more in control but also support the physiological aspects of labor by promoting the release of oxytocin and reducing stress hormones, leading to smoother labor experiences.

Elise Carney, RN, says the cart is yet another way for the Labor & Delivery team to extend heartfelt care to mothers and their families. “Our Labor of Love cart brings comfort and care to the unit, helping to uplift the environment and experience for patients who deserve so much as they welcome new life into the world.”
