Essentia Health-Fargo recently celebrated a major milestone with the graduation of the first participant to complete its newly launched registered surgical technologist apprenticeship program. The 12-month apprenticeship, registered by the U.S. Department of Labor and the State of North Dakota, combines hands-on training, mentorship and formal instruction. Surgical technologists, also known as operating room technicians, help prepare patients and the operating room prior to the procedure.

The program was created to address a national shortage of surgical technologists, driven by an aging population and a decline in accredited programs. Graduate Tessa Connors, (above left) who began her career at Essentia as a sterile processing technician, embraced the opportunity to transition into surgery without returning to school full-time.

“This program is a promise to our patients and our community that we are finding local talent, we are investing in our employees and providing this local opportunity to produce highly skilled professionals who will work and live in our community,” said Amber Huez, surgical services director at Essentia Health-Fargo.

Huez added that the initiative not only bridges workforce gaps but also removes barriers for those seeking career advancement. Connors is now preparing for her certification exam and will join Essentia’s “red team,” specializing in general and cardiovascular surgery. LEARN MORE
