Arizona Hospital Achieves Milestone with First Robotic-Assisted Kidney Transplant

St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. Surgeon operates with robotic medical device

St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, has made a significant advancement in medical technology by performing the state’s first kidney transplant using robotic technology. This innovative procedure was carried out by the Norton Thoracic Institute at the hospital, marking a milestone in patient care.

The use of robotic-assisted surgery offers numerous benefits, including quicker recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and reduced pain and scarring for patients. This progress is particularly important given the high demand for kidney transplants in Arizona, where over 1,500 patients are currently in need.

The introduction of robotic technology in these procedures is expected to enhance patient outcomes and expand access to life-saving transplants.

“By offering robotic-assisted kidney transplants, we are opening the door for more patients to receive the gift of life through a minimally-invasive procedure,” said Brandi Krushelniski, vice president of Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Norton Thoracic Institute.
