St. Mary’s Health System has expanded its behavioral and mental health services to help close gaps and ensure a continuum of care services in the community.

From a dedicated behavioral emergency department to comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, St. Mary’s programs are designed to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care to children, adolescents and adults.

  • Behavioral Emergency Care Center, one of the only facilities of its kind in Maine, offers a safe, private space and separate treatment areas for children and adults experiencing urgent behavioral and mental health needs.
  • Day Hospital Program provides short-term, structured mental health treatment — including group therapy, skill-building and medication support — for adults who need more than weekly therapy but do not need inpatient care.
  • Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, opened in December 2021, provides short-term, intensive treatment to help adults who are experiencing a psychiatric illness or mental health crisis stabilize and begin healing.
  • Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit provides short-term crisis stabilization in a safe, structured environment for young people ages 12 to 17 who are experiencing anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD and psychosis.
  • Center for Recovery offers immediate help for people with mental health issues and substance use disorders. Services include a Rapid Access Center for same-day assessment and care, inpatient stabilization and treatment, and seamless transitions to outpatient care at St. Mary’s or community partners.

“St. Mary’s care services help meet the mental health and substance use disorder treatment needs of both adolescents and adults,” said Greg Bowers, vice president of behavioral health. “We’re mindful of the fact that the more support services we offer, the healthier our community will be.”
