Telling the Hospital Story: From bump to baby: East Alabama Medical Center’s birth navigators make the journey

Nothing can ever completely prepare a woman for pregnancy and childbirth, but East Alabama Medical Center’s Birth Navigator program aims to get as close as possible. The program, launched in 2019, connects mothers with a dedicated guide who helps them throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the months immediately after delivery.

“Each appointment is tailored to address the individual needs of the mother but generally includes a detailed overview of what to expect when arriving at the hospital, including facility amenities and procedures,” said Wendy Shelton, RN. “We discuss what to bring for labor, options for managing labor and delivery, and preparations for a C-section, if necessary.”

Birth navigators can also recommend other EAMC classes, such as ones on childbirth and breastfeeding, as well as support groups.

“What I enjoy most is being part of such a special moment in a family’s life,” Shelton said. “Knowing that my guidance helps mothers feel more secure, informed and empowered as they prepare to welcome their baby is incredibly rewarding.”
