Grundy County Hospital maintenance team poses with bags of trash

An Iowa hospital is being recognized for going above and beyond after staff members used an unconventional method to help a patient recover priceless family heirlooms that were accidentally thrown away. According to a report from CBS News Chicago, the incident began when, during a routine visit, a patient unknowingly discarded jewelry with deep sentimental value, prompting hospital workers to launch an extensive search through the trash.

Maintenance crews initially combed through dozens of garbage bags and even used metal detectors in an attempt to locate the missing items, but those efforts came up empty. Refusing to give up, the team turned to a creative solution: repurposing a portable X-ray machine typically used for medical imaging. By scanning bag after bag, staff were eventually able to pinpoint the heirlooms without manually opening every container.

After roughly 45 minutes and dozens of X-ray images, the treasured items were successfully recovered and returned to the patient, who expressed gratitude for the extraordinary lengths taken by the hospital team.
