Hawaii hospital eases transition from hospital to home with bedside medication delivery

At Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku, Hawaii, a new partnership between Maui Health and Mauliola Pharmacy is helping patients leave the hospital with the medications and support they need for a smoother recovery.
Through the Meds to ER and Meds to Beds programs, patients can receive prescription medications before leaving the emergency department or inpatient unit, respectively, making the transition from hospital to home more convenient.
“This partnership creates value for our patients in a thoughtful and deliberate way,” said Wade Ebersole, interim CEO of Maui Health. “We want our patients to leave the hospital with the medication that they need so they can focus on healing and recovery.”
In addition to delivering medications directly to patients for no additional charge beyond copays or medication costs, the programs include bedside counseling from pharmacists to help patients understand how and when to take their prescriptions. By reducing barriers to obtaining medications after discharge, the initiative aims to improve medication adherence and support better health outcomes.
