Hawaii state leaders, Maui Health and Kaiser Permanente announced plans to restore and reopen Kula Hospital after the March 2026 Kona Low storms caused significant damage and forced the temporary closure of the hospital, including its emergency department and the Hale Makamae care facility. The project will be jointly funded through commitments from the state of Hawaii and Kaiser Permanente.
“Restoring Kula Hospital is essential to protecting access to emergency, inpatient and long-term care for Upcountry Maui,” said President and CEO of Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation Ed Chu. “This investment will rebuild a stronger, more resilient facility where patients and residents can receive high-quality healthcare close to home, while helping Maui’s healthcare system withstand future emergencies.”
This project will include repairs and modernization of resident rooms, activity areas, nurse stations and critical building systems, as well as the replacement of windows and doors with weather-resistant units that meet historic preservation requirements. Detailed construction planning is underway, and Maui Health will share a reopening timeline once confirmed.
