Youth apprenticeship program prepares next generation of healthcare workers

Mercy and the School District of Washington have launched a registered youth apprenticeship program to both introduce high school students to healthcare careers and address long-term workforce needs. The initiative combines classroom instruction with hands-on training at Mercy Hospital Washington, giving students direct experience in clinical care settings.
The program’s first apprentices will serve as patient care associates, working alongside licensed nurses and care teams to support patient care activities, including taking vital signs, assisting with daily living needs and facilitating team communication.
Mercy plans to expand apprenticeships into additional areas, including culinary services, facilities management and other patient-facing roles. Leaders say the broader goal is to develop healthcare professionals with ties to the organization and community early in their careers.
