Study: Consumer Engagement Improves Care
Consumer engagement activities that involve patients and family as partners on the care team are associated with increases in patient safety and treatment savings, research in the Journal of Nursing Administration finds. The study included a literature review and 25 supplementary interviews with nursing executives and chief nursing officers. The authors concluded that consumer engagement results in reduced length of stay, reduced medication errors, and that engagement initiatives support employee health and reduce compassion fatigue. Tracey Hoffman, an oncology nurse at Norton Hospital in Indiana, went above and beyond to help fulfill the dying wish of one of her patients, USA Today reports. When she learned that 69-year-old Joe Booth —who was losing his fight with prostate cancer — wanted to fly in a plane for the first time, she took to Facebook to ask for help. More than 25 pilots volunteered, and Booth was able to take his first flight at the end of March — even taking control of the plane and flying it temporarily.
