This Independence Day, as we take time to spend with family and friends, we also celebrate our democracy and the values that our nation holds dear. One of them is the freedom and responsibility we have as citizens to make our voices heard and participate in the shaping of public policy for the future of our country.

As we know, the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) hit a roadblock this week, and the Senate has postponed a vote until after Congress’s scheduled July 4 recess. Because it would put coverage in jeopardy for millions of our fellow citizens, that’s good news for patients and communities. But the bill is far from dead—and our fight to protect health coverage is far from over.

We must continue to make sure our views are heard loudly and strongly. America’s hospitals and health systems have done a fantastic job of mobilizing their employees and trustees to speak up for patients, and sending thousands of messages to senators’ offices. Please continue to urge your senators to oppose the BCRA and instead choose better health for our patients and our communities. The message is clear, and the time is now.

To help you make our case, we’ve provided talking points, answers to frequently asked questions, and other resources for your use. In addition, the Coalition to Protect America’s Health Care, of which the AHA is a founding member, will continue to run TV, radio, and digital ads in key states over the recess to further reinforce our message. And in the weeks to come, look for AHA-planned advocacy days, webcasts, member calls and updates to keep you informed with the latest developments.

Our nation has had many important debates in the 241 years since our founding…and this is certainly one of the most important for our generation. The health of millions is at stake, and you can continue to make a difference.
