Congress passes trade bill without extension of Medicare sequester
The House of Representatives today voted 286-138 to approve a Trade Adjustment Assistance bill without extending the sequester on Medicare in 2024 to pay for the bill. The TAA program, which provides federal job-training and other assistance to workers, firms, farmers and communities that have been hurt by foreign trade, was packaged with the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act and other programs. The bill, which passed the Senate yesterday, now goes to President Obama for his signature. The AHA and other national health care organizations had urged Congress not to extend the sequester on Medicare to pay for the trade legislation.
