GAO issues full findings from survey of state Medicaid financing methods
The Government Accountability Office today issued comprehensive results from a survey of state methods for financing Medicaid payments from 2008 to 2012, a supplement to the agency’s July 2014 report on the survey. Based on a questionnaire sent to state Medicaid agencies, the 2014 report found that states financed 26%, or more than $46 billion, of the nonfederal share of Medicaid expenditures with funds from health care providers and local governments in state fiscal year 2012. It recommended that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services take steps to ensure states report accurate and complete data on all non-federal Medicaid funding sources. CMS did not concur with the 2014 recommendation, but said it would examine efforts to improve data collection for oversight.
