MaineHealth’s workforce development programs help widen the talent pipeline

MaineHealth is among the hospitals and health systems with innovative programs that offer employment and professional development opportunities for community members and current team members — benefiting the community and helping the organization meet its workforce needs.

The MaineHealth Center for Workforce Development creates and strengthens employment and growth opportunities for current employees, students interested in health careers and others in the community. Individuals who started at the health system working in environmental services have moved to other roles, including patient service representatives and surgical technicians. Students can participate in internships and health career education programs.

Opportunities include:

  • Education and training for employees and nonemployees to explore jobs like phlebotomist, medical assistant and certified nursing assistant. These training programs are free and include flexible, virtual course modules. Those who complete the program and meet all hiring requirements are offered an interview.
  • A summer internship program for undergraduate and graduate students to gain hands-on experience working in a health system. Another program, Inside Medicine, is designed for high school students to explore health care careers; the program is co-led by the Maine Medical Center Department of Medical Education and Tufts University medical students.
  • Adult education and employment support. Opportunities created through local partnerships with Goodwill of Northern New England, the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center, and Live + Work in Maine help individuals reenter the workforce, receive English language support, if needed, and more.
