Nearly 40% of Rhode Island households are food insecure, according to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and other sources.
Providence VA Medical Center is working to meet the needs of veterans who are food insecure, including homeless veterans. It’s estimated as many as 1,500 veterans in Rhode Island are homeless. To ensure veterans have “reliable access to nutritious food in a welcoming, stigma-free environment,” the medical center recently opened Nourish & Flourish, an on-site food pantry.
Nourish & Flourish is open three days of week for veterans to explore and use. The team at VA Providence sees the food pantry as part of its efforts to strengthen support systems for veterans in the state.
