Be Well: Preventing Physician Suicide

Health care providers across our diverse workforce are faced with an ever increasing complexity in the systems and approaches we use. As the nation looks for ways to lower rates of suicide, it is critical we address physician suicide as well. The rate of suicide among physicians is twice that of the general population. To shed light on the issue and highlight prevention strategies, the AHA's Physician Alliance and the Education Development Center (EDC) have created a podcast series with stories of recovery and ideas for supporting colleagues struggling with thoughts of suicide.

The podcasts build on existing resources to foster well-being, such as the AHA Physician Alliance's Well-Being Playbook, as well as EDC's Suicide Prevention Resource Center which provides technical assistance, training and materials.

If you or anyone you know is struggling, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) to speak to a trained professional.

Please click here for more from Dr. Jay Bhatt, former SVP & Chief Medical Officer, AHA and Dr. Jerry Reed, SVP for Practice Leadership, EDC about the series.
