While lawmakers are in their district, it is important for the field to engage with members of Congress to remind them of the importance of preserving access to care by continuing to fund vital programs like telehealth and hospital-at-home waivers, and avoiding harmful policies such as site-neutral payments and Medicaid DSH cuts.

America’s hospitals and health systems continue to deal with the difficult challenges of high inflation and ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, hospitals are facing significant increases in costs of labor from workforce shortages, drugs, equipment and supplies (including food and energy costs) that are threatening their stability and ability to provide access to high quality health care services. The AHA has developed resources that hospital leaders can use to advocate on these important issues.

Just as there are challenges to making health care more affordable, there are many opportunities to reduce costs without compromising care. Hospitals are pursuing these opportunities in variety of ways. Many are tackling the affordability issue already, seeking change that makes sense for them and the communities they serve, and working to improve, price transparency and eliminate ‘surprise’ billing.
