What is it?

This not-for-profit, charitable initiative provides free, state-of-the art joint-replacement surgery to uninsured and underserved patients in the Newark area. The program is modeled on the global and national Operation Walk programs founded by orthopedic surgeon Lawrence Dorr, MD, of Los Angeles.

Who is it for?

Underserved greater Newark residents needing orthopedic surgery.

Why do they do it?

The program seeks to bring freedom from pain and disability to the city’s poorest and most vulnerable residents, who otherwise might not have access to state-of-the-art care.

Impact

Since fall 2010, free hip and knee replacements have been provided to 14 patients directly involved with the program. Thanks to Operation Walk, individuals with crippling arthritis, avascular necrosis and other debilitating conditions are receiving restored freedom of movement and the ability to walk again.
