Memorial Hospital - River Bluff Trail Project

After identifying a need to address the high-risk, poor lifestyle behaviors of the community, Memorial Hospital, an 83-bed, county-owned regional medical center, spearheaded a collaborative community project to build an accessible walking trail on an abandoned railway in a picturesque area with abundant wildlife, spectacular views, and close proximity to a river. In 2008, the trial was connected to 3.5 acres of mature forest known as the Hervey Preserve. The Hervey boasts a 1.1-mile stone trail that connects to the River Bluff Trail and a walking labyrinth.

What is it?

After identifying a need to address the high-risk, poor lifestyle behaviors of the community, Memorial Hospital, an 83-bed, county-owned regional medical center, spearheaded a collaborative community project to build an accessible walking trail on an abandoned railway in a picturesque area with abundant wildlife, spectacular views, and close proximity to a river. In 2008, the trial was connected to 3.5 acres of mature forest known as the Hervey Preserve. The Hervey boasts a 1.1-mile stone trail that connects to the River Bluff Trail and a walking labyrinth.

The 1.3-mile long, 10-foot-wide paved and landscaped trail is designed for walking, running, biking, and roller-blading, with bridge overlooks, resting places, a picnic area and parking at both entrances. With the addition of the Hervey Preserve, Logansport Memorial Hospital provides 2.4 miles of the trails that are used by the community. In addition, the hospital hosts races and walking events on the trail and incorporates it into their wellness program to encourage employees and their families to stay healthy.

Who is it for?

All community members.

Why do they do it?

According to a study by the Indiana Hospital & Health Association, Indiana ranks among the highest states in several critical unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and obesity. Its residents run a higher risk for cancer and heart disease. The walking trail project grew out of a vision to develop a community project that would have long-lasting, positive impact on the community's health.

Impact

Approximately 4,000 community members use the trail every week. Construction is underway to connect the trail to the city of Logansport system with a footbridge crossing the Eel River.
