St. Joseph's/Candler - St. Mary's Health Center
What is it?
The St. Joseph’s/Candler (SJ/C) St. Mary’s Health Center provides a medical home for individuals who do not have insurance and do not qualify for Medicaid, but have a non-emergent need for medical care, including women’s services. SJ/C physicians volunteer their time, and the nurses help clients find affordable or free medications. What began as screenings at an outreach center in a poor neighborhood has grown to meet demand and now is open Monday through Friday at its own location. The health center was one of the programs that helped SJ/C win the 2012 Foster G. McGaw Prize from the AHA and the Baxter International Foundation.
Who is it for?
Uninsured adults age 19 to 64 who do not qualify for Medicaid.
Why do they do it?
The health center provides primary care and a medical home to individuals with limited resources.
Impact
Each year the clinic treats more than 3,400 patients. In 2009, the health center became the first free medical office in Georgia to implement electronic health record technology.
