Wamego City Hospital - Get Fit Wamego
Overview
Get Fit Wamego is a 12-week recreational fitness challenge that promotes a change in lifestyle, rather than adherence to a diet program. The program was designed to support participants in attaining their fitness goals by introducing a variety of nutrition and fitness opportunities. The program begins with fasting labs, blood pressure checks, body mass index, and one-on-one consulting. Fitness education events include wellness coaching, motivational speakers, and sessions with dietitians. A wide variety of fitness activities are offered, from aerobics to Zumba.
Impact
Get Fit Wamego offers participants an opportunity to jump-start their wellness journey in a non-competitive group setting with support from fitness and wellness experts in the community. The Get Fit Wamego Fitness Challenge increases awareness of the benefits of eating healthy and engaging in physical activities throughout the community. In 2013, participation has increased from previous years.
Challenges/success factors
Program organizers were concerned that the mandatory health screening might dissuade people from participation, but the initial health screening provides baseline data for comparison at the end of the program. This pre- and post-program data helps to demonstrate the effectiveness of engaging in healthy living. Participants were excited to have the information both for their own knowledge and to share with their physicians.
Future direction/sustainability
In post-program surveys, several participants commented that they will return next year. Get Fit Wamego completed its fourth year and is a highly anticipated program in the community.
Advice to others
Have a highly dedicated team, and be sure to plan according to weather in your area. Moving the program dates from spring/summer to winter/spring caught New Year’s resolutions and increased participation.
