President-elect Joe Biden today nominated former White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough as Secretary of Veterans Affairs. McDonough also previously served the Obama administration as deputy national security advisor.

In a statement, AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack said, “We are pleased to support the nomination of Denis McDonough to serve as the next Secretary of Veterans Affairs. As White House chief-of-staff, he was a strong supporter of veterans, ensuring that they had access to the full benefits they deserve for their service to our country. Known for his commitment to health care, he was instrumental in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Because of his leadership, millions of Americans were able to gain health insurance for the first time, including through expansion of the Medicaid program, and pre-existing conditions were protected.

“His service and leadership as the Deputy National Security Advisor and with the National Security Council has also prepared him to be the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. He is a trusted public servant and will work tirelessly for veterans.

“Hospitals and health systems are strongly committed to providing care to veterans in their communities and honoring their service to our country. We are confident in Denis McDonough’s continued leadership as he manages the VA’s mission to ensure veterans receive the high-quality care they deserve.”
