Drug overdose deaths have dropped by 10% this year compared to last, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This year also marked an annual decline in overdose deaths for the first time in five years. On Aug. 31, federal agencies awarded an additional $416 million to respond to the overdose crisis and support substance use treatment and recovery services. The AHA remains focused on supporting hospitals and health systems in reducing drug overdose deaths, including by providing resources to enhance opioid stewardship.
