Steven Summer to Receive 2024 AHA Board of Trustees Award

WASHINGTON (April 11, 2024) — The American Hospital Association (AHA) today announced that Steven Summer, the former president of the Colorado and West Virginia Hospital Associations, will be awarded AHA’s 2024 Board of Trustees Award. Summer is currently the president and CEO of the Healthcare Institute. The Board of Trustees Award is presented to individuals or groups who have made substantial and noteworthy contributions to the work of the AHA on behalf of the hospital field.

Summer will receive the award during an April 15 ceremony at the AHA Annual Membership Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“Steven has had a remarkable career, leading state hospital associations across the country and successfully advocating for policies to expand and enhance patient care,” said AHA president and CEO Rick Pollack. “In addition to helping hospitals in his states improve quality, access and innovations in health care delivery, Steven’s contributions have benefited the entire health care field.”

Summer has been involved with the AHA for more than 30 years in various roles including on the Rural Health Services Committee, the Committee on Research, AHAPAC Steering Committee, the Dick Davidson NOVA Award Committee, and the Task Force on Ensuring Access in Vulnerable Communities, as well as numerous other task forces and advisory positions.

Summer was appointed president and CEO of the Healthcare Institute in January 2020 following his retirement from the Colorado Hospital Association, which he served as president and CEO from 2006 through 2019. Prior to that, Steven spent 13 years as president and CEO with the West Virginia Hospital Association and held several leadership positions with the Maryland Hospital Association before that. During Summer’s career, he helped improve reimbursement for Colorado hospitals, pass Medicaid expansion and advance hospital safety improvements, among other things.
