Increasing Access, Improving Care

Every October pink appears on everything from ribbons to football helmets and even illuminates the White House to raise awareness about breast cancer. Every day hospitals and health care systems conduct screenings and provide quality care for women (and men) diagnosed with the disease. St. Vincent Healthcare, a 286-bed hospital based in Billings, Mont., offers breast cancer outreach and educational services to surrounding areas through its Yellowstone Breast Center. In 2010, the St. Vincent Healthcare Mobile Mammography Coach began operating and has improved health care access for a diverse population, including a large number of Native Americans, regardless of ability to pay. To date, the health care team on the mobile mammography coach has performed 6,500 mammograms and exams and detected 13 cases of breast cancer.
