Issue-Brief: Reducing Incivility and Violence in Healthcare Settings: Maximizing the Use of De-escalation Techniques
Introduction
Hospitals and health systems are not immune from the rise of incivility and aggressive behaviors in communities across the U.S., creating an environment where it can be challenging to keep safety and compassion at the forefront. These aggressive feelings and behaviors don’t stop at the doors when patients and families come into the hospital. The consequences can be severe; verbal abuse and violence in healthcare settings make it more difficult to provide safe, high-quality care. A 2025 American Hospital Association report estimated that violence cost hospitals and health systems more than $18 billion in 2023 alone.
