Maureen Swick, RN, Ph.D., Named Chief Executive Officer of the American Organization of Nurse Executives and Senior Vice President of the AHA

The American Hospital Association today named Maureen Swick, R.N., Ph.D., chief executive officer of the American Organization of Nurse Executives and senior vice president, nursing of the AHA.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 15, 2016 ) – The American Hospital Association (AHA) today named Maureen Swick, R.N., Ph.D., chief executive officer of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and senior vice president, nursing of the AHA.

For the past six years, Swick has been the senior vice president and chief nurse executive for Inova, a not-for-profit health care system based in Northern Virginia that serves more than

2 million people each year. Prior to that, she held a variety of nursing leadership and management roles at hospitals and health systems across the northeastern United States.

In her role at AONE, Swick will lead a membership organization of more than 9,500 nurse leaders whose strategic focus is excellence in nursing leadership. She will play a leadership role in a number of key initiatives involving workforce, quality and safety, and future care delivery models. In addition, she will work collaboratively with the AHA to ensure the perspective and needs of nurse leaders are heard and addressed in public policy issues related to nursing and patient care.

Her extensive health care background will be instrumental in promoting nursing leadership excellence and helping to shape public policy for health care for years to come,” said AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack.

Swick served as a board member for both AONE and the AHA, and is currently the president of AONE’s board. Swick has more than 25 years’ experience in health care. She has received numerous awards, including the 2011 Outstanding Achievement Award-Nursing Spectrum and the AONE National Award in Leadership Informatics. She earned her Ph.D. at Kennedy Western University and a Master of Science in nursing from Columbia University, New York.
