Who is it for?

People without health insurance.

Why do they do it?

In 2003, a group of local physicians and clergy came together to discuss mutual concerns about the availability of primary care services for uninsured persons in Manhattan. This group grew to include the Ministerial Association and eventually Mercy Regional Health Center for the purpose of organizing a community-wide effort to provide a free medical clinic in Manhattan.

The growing interest attracted members of a retired physicians group, additional health care providers and other interested community members to join the committee. The committee named the clinic FHCC and chose a site located in the downtown area based on easy accessibility for homeless and indigent clients. The FHCC opened in July 2005.

Initially the clinic was open on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Since then, the clinic has expanded its hours of operation to include Wednesday afternoons and Thursday evenings to meet the needs of those being served. Start-up costs for the clinic, as well as the salary for the clinic coordinator (only paid employee), are underwritten by Mercy Regional Health Center. Mercy Regional also provides lab and diagnostic tests at no charge to the clinic's patients.

Impact

In its first month of operation, the clinic had 24 visits; the number of visits continues to grow.
