What is it?

Involvement by INTEGRIS Health began with more typical after-school and summer programs and school health services but has since graduated to running the charter elementary school, fully sponsored through Oklahoma's elementary school charter program. Charter status provides site-based management, financial oversight and decision making.

The school includes an arts-integrated curriculum, after-school, summer and Saturday-school programs, a school-wide reading program; sports, health, wellness, and parent outreach initiatives; and 300 mentors (one for every student) from the business community. Significant improvements to the facility have enabled the school to become a community center, serving the health care needs of the students and their families, and providing adult education opportunities

Who is it for?

A predominately low-income student population that is 90 percent African American, 5 percent Hispanic, 4 percent Caucasian and 1percent Asian. Eighty-nine percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Why do they do it?

The goal is to improve the education and health status of children in the community.

Impact

The grade school has been taken off the state's "low performing/high challenge" school listing, and test scores in all grades have shown improvement in reading, writing and math.
