What is it?

Mercy Clinic – which operates every Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Pittsburg County Health Department – provides no-cost primary care, mental health care, some dental services, eye exams and eyeglasses. Staff also focus on controlling diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol; and monitoring chronic conditions.

Who is it for?

Uninsured individuals who need primary care services, many of whom had been using the hospital’s emergency department (ED) for their basic medical needs.

Why do they do it?

Mercy Clinic’s goal in the beginning was to provide primary care for indigent patients as an alternative to patients visiting the ED. Clinic physicians soon discovered a large group of people with chronic health care issues, no insurance and no resources to purchase medications. The clinic now focuses on controlling or monitoring chronic conditions.

Impact

Mercy Clinic has been serving the uninsured in and around McAlester for more than 20 years. They see approximately 70 patients every Wednesday.
