Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island - Community Garden
What is it?
In spring 2014, staff from the hospital’s Department of Family Medicine helped build a community garden at the Elizabeth Baldwin Elementary School to help students and their families learn about healthy eating. The garden is made possible by $7,000 in grant funding from Lowe’s Home Improvement and the Whole Kids Foundation.
Who is it for?
The school’s more than 750 children in kindergarten through fifth grade
Why do they do it?
The project is part of an ongoing partnership between Memorial staff and the school, in which health care providers teach students about the importance of regular exercise and healthy eating habits.
Impact
The garden project will become an important part of education for residents who do a nutrition rotation at the school as part of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University’s Family Medicine Residency Program.
