Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently unveiled an agentic AI solution designed for health care providers. Amazon Connect Health can tackle high-volume administrative tasks such as clinical documentation, medical coding and appointment scheduling, allowing clinicians to devote more time to direct care delivery, according to an AWS blog post.

Amazon Connect Health builds on Amazon Connect, a platform designed to support businesses in delivering personalized customer experiences. AWS has crafted the new solution specifically to meet the needs of health care providers, with the ability to comprehend call context as well as patient preferences. The AI can also discern when situations require human intervention and escalate to a staff member.

In addition to reduced administrative burden, the platform expands access for patients, since the AI agent can respond to requests around the clock. Some providers are already making a difference in care delivery with agentic AI. For example, a health system that handles 3.2 million patient interactions per year is saving 1 minute per call with Amazon Connect Health. Subsequently, the system has shifted 630 hours of labor per week from patient verification to direct assistance.

The Rise of AI Tailor-Made for Health Care Providers

Amazon Connect Health joins a series of solutions that tech companies and AI providers have introduced this year geared specifically to meet the needs of health care professionals. The announcement from AWS follows the launch of Claude for Healthcare from Anthropic and OpenAI for Healthcare, which both debuted in January 2026.

Agentic AI — which is capable of autonomously understanding context, making decisions and acting to support the achievement of objectives within a defined context — has potential to improve patient engagement and clinical workflows while increasing administrative efficiency, according to Microsoft. These solutions go beyond what generative AI assistants can accomplish (understanding natural language and generating content in response to prompts) to independently follow complex workflows. For example, agentic AI might retrieve patient data from various systems, analyze it and then compile a report.

These AI tools can help providers overcome common challenges as they seek to deliver high-quality personalized care. At the 2026 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in January, Kimberly Powell, vice president of health care for the tech giant Nvidia, described 2025 as “an absolute breakout year for agentic AI” and noted that health care providers around the world are realizing that these advanced AI tools can mitigate the effects of workforce shortages.

Use Cases for Agentic AI in Health Care

Amazon Connect Health’s key capabilities currently include the following:

  • Conversational patient identity verification (generally available) including real-time electronic health record (EHR) integration
  • Appointment management (preview) via natural language voice scheduling, allowing patients to book, reschedule or cancel 24/7, along with EHR integration and real-time insurance verification abilities

Here are a few more ways agentic AI, in general, can potentially make life easier for clinicians, according to Guidehouse. Note: This is not an exhaustive list.

  • Prior authorization management, including determining if prior authorization is needed, retrieving information from the EHR, populating forms and submitting and monitoring the status of requests
  • Clinical documentation and coding, including listening, creating structured documentation, applying the appropriate coding and submitting claims
  • Cross-setting care coordination, including sending patient reminders, scheduling follow-up appointments, arranging home health service delivery and updating patient portals
