Advancing Acute Care Surgery
Stony Brook University Hospital coordinated efforts with its emergency department and ambulatory surgery center to establish the exigent general surgery (XGS) service. This service not only streamlines the care of patients with acute abdominal conditions but also provides timely diagnosis and treatment for other acute illnesses. With the help of more staffing, space and expanded hours through the collaboration of clinical and administrative management, this service reduces the time of surgery and length of stay and promotes earlier surgical intervention by eliminating wait time during admissions.
