Rebuilding a New Minneapolis: From Tragedy to Transformation
The AHA has released Rebuilding a New Minneapolis: From Tragedy to Transformation, a two-part video discussing how George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020, has transformed diversity, equity and inclusion work in Minneapolis and its surrounding communities. Part 1 of the video features a conversation with hospital executives and senior health equity leaders about what their organizations did in the immediate aftermath of Floyd’s murder and how they helped lead efforts to rebuild their communities. Part 2 of the video features a conversation with a group of health equity and diversity officers, as well as Minneapolis-based community partners. They discuss the work their organizations are doing to improve health outcomes, and the importance of having a collaborative approach to advance and sustain health equity in their communities.
Part 1: Hospital Leaders Speak Out
Minneapolis has often been referred to as Ground Zero for this generation’s social justice movement. The murder of George Floyd at the hands of law enforcement led to a national outcry for racial justice, equity and the need to re-examine harmful policies and practices. It was also a defining moment for hospital and health system leaders across the country to reflect on their leadership efforts to advance health equity. Three years later, six Minneapolis hospital leaders sit down to discuss how the summer of 2020 shaped the future of their work, and how that moment in time impacted their organization.
