Advocacy Issue: Workplace Violence
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care workers across the nation have experienced a sharp increase in incidences of workplace violence, with no sign that this trend is receding. Despite the diligent efforts of hospitals and health systems to prevent violence, health care workers remain five times more likely than any other type of worker to be physically attacked on the job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
AHA/ACEP, Others Urge CMS to Allow Hospitals to Post Anti-violence Signage in EDs
We respectfully request that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issue clear guidance enabling hospitals to post appropriate signage in emergency departments (EDs) to discourage threats and acts of violence against health care workers, consistent with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).
Teaching Hospitals
There are over 1,000 teaching hospitals that directly employ 2.7 million people and are among the largest employers in their communities.
Advocacy Issue: SAVE Act
Hospitals, health systems and their staff support enactment of a federal law that would protect health care workers from violence and intimidation, just as current federal law protects airline and airport workers. Congress should enact the bipartisan Save Healthcare Workers Act (SAVE) (H.R. 3178/S. 1600), which provides protections similar to those for flight crews, flight attendants and airport workers.
