Rural Health Services
Over 57 million rural Americans depend on their hospital as an important source of care as well as a critical component of their area's economic and social fabric. Collaborating with state and regional hospital associations and with advice from its member council, the Section tracks the issues, develops policies and identifies solutions to our most pressing problems.

Advocacy Issue: Site-Neutral Payment Proposals
Hospitals and their associated facilities provide access to critical services that are not otherwise always available in the community and they treat patients with very severe conditions. Payment proposals that attempt to treat hospital outpatient departments the same as independent physician offices and other ambulatory sites of care ignore the very different level of care provided by hospitals and the needs of the patients and communities cared for in that setting.
Advocacy Issue: Medicaid
The Medicaid program is the largest single source of health care coverage in the United States, covering nearly half of all children, many low-income elderly and disabled individuals, and working adults in low-wage jobs. With the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21), Congress made policy changes that will reduce federal spending for the Medicaid program by hundreds of billions of dollars over the next 10 years.
Better Health for Mothers and Babies
Through the AHA’s Better Health for Mothers and Babies Initiative, the AHA is working alongside hospitals and health care systems to help mothers and their babies thrive.
Supporting Victims and Communities of Mass Violence Incidents
The Hospitals Against Violence Initiative (HAV) is proud to partner with the National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center (NMVVRC) to provide resources and support surrounding incidents of mass violence for the communities and patients served by our hospitals and health systems.
