Congress should take a number of actions to help hospitals and health systems support today’s workforce and ensure a future pipeline of professionals to meet the nation’s increasing demands for care.
Rural Health Services
Over 57 million rural Americans depend on their hospital as an important source of care as well as a critical component of their area's economic and social fabric. Location, size, workforce, payment and access to capital challenge small or rural hospitals and the communities they serve. Collaborating with state and regional hospital associations and with advice from its member council, the Section tracks the issues, develops policies and identifies solutions to our most pressing problems.

The resources in this section help educate and inform hospitals and health systems on the importance and value of reducing stigma, as well as prevention and early intervention initiatives for individuals with behavioral health disorders.

AHA/ACEP, Others Urge CMS to Allow Hospitals to Post Anti-violence Signage in EDs
We respectfully request that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issue clear guidance enabling hospitals to post appropriate signage in emergency departments (EDs) to discourage threats and acts of violence against health care workers, consistent with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).
Advocacy Issue: Workplace Violence
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care workers across the nation have experienced a sharp increase in incidences of workplace violence, with no sign that this trend is receding. Despite the diligent efforts of hospitals and health systems to prevent violence, health care workers remain five times more likely than any other type of worker to be physically attacked on the job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
