Holy Cross Hospital - Partners in Breast Health
What is it?
Launched in 2011, the Holy Cross Hospital Partners in Breast Health program provides free outreach education, clinical breast exams, screening mammograms and diagnostic procedures to lower-income and minority women 40 and older who lack access to health care services. The program also offers services to symptomatic women who are younger than 40. Follow-up is included to assist patients with additional diagnostics, treatment and special needs. The hospital’s Mobile Health Unit visits underserved communities in central and northern Broward County.
Who is it for?
Uninsured minority women who lack access to breast health resources.
Why do they do it?
Studies show that African-American and Hispanic women are more likely than the overall population to die from breast cancer due to late-stage diagnoses and lack of screenings.
Impact
Since its inception, the program has served more than 3,000 women. Nearly 50 percent of patients diagnosed with breast cancer have been under the age of 50.
