Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital - The ALMH Market

The Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital (ALMH) Market is an indoor, producer-only farmers market in Lincoln. Vendors must either grow or make the items they sell. The Market is located at the Logan County Fairgrounds every Saturday May through October and is a wellness destination that features fresh produce, eggs, meats, poultry, and more. It also provides free monthly health screenings, free fitness classes and free cooking demonstrations. The POP (Power of Produce) Club is available weekly for children ages 5 to 12. POP Club members learn about the food system and participate in taste testing of new fruits and vegetables. Children who participate earn Market tokens to spend at The Market. The POP Club began at the Oregon City Farmers Market in Oregon. The Market also offers a food stamp matching program to encourage low-income residents to participate in The Market and incorporate fresh produce into their diets.

Who is it for?

All residents of Logan and eastern Mason Counties (a population of approximately 32,000 people).

Why do they do it?

In Logan County, more than 40 percent of adults are obese. To address the obesity rate, a variety of community programs have been funded by the ALMH Foundation. The farmers market encourages an increase in fruit and vegetable consumption. The producer-only designation of the market allows residents to have conversations with the farmers who are growing their food and support the agricultural community.

Impact

The Market opened in May 2016 and has maintained an average weekly attendance of more than 600 people. For more information, visit www.thealmhmarket.org.
